UHLIŠTĚ MONASTERY
Proposal • Principal architect Zuzana Kurz
The monastery brings answers to a matter of a sustainable construction and agriculture, not only in terms of production and cultivation but above all by embedding spiritual values in the landscape. As such it does represent a strong checkpoint. It represents the values of virtue, hospitality, independence, purity, affection, but also strength. We thought about a life of an individual, his cycle, nothingness and eternity. We longed for lively architecture instead of an empty hotel in the middle of the Sudetenland landscape of the Novohradské Mountains. We created a monastery that has become a symbol of strength, permanence, truth, education, peace and love.
We treat the whole monastery complex as a compositional unit. Besides houses we design also roads, alleys, footpaths, pastures, water drives, flower beds. We perceive the monastery itself as a closed world with an exceptional life inside. A life in presence connected with God at all times. A place for the highest concentration on prayer. A place that marries opposites such as independence and belonging, quietness and buzz. After all what makes a monastery a real monastery? We believe it is its own world and the story in it.
